WELCOME
A personal note from Mark Halsted
Over the course of the 37 years since I entered the Yale School of Medicine the threads of my career have woven a complex tapestry of experiences - which in turn led to my founding a new medical practice that I invite you to consider joining, designed to rekindle your interest in delivering personalized, unrushed, thoughtful healthcare, and to remind you why you were attracted to becoming a physician in the first place.
After decades in academic and private practices, as a physician I craved working in a clinical practice that was more fulfilling and satisfying than traditional care delivery models had become, while also providing care that was more useful, trusted, and responsive to the needs of patients.
I’m a triple board certified radiologist who has worked in academic and private practices including via tele-health, with privileges in hundreds of hospitals and medical licenses in dozens of states.
I’ve noticed a common thread: financial pressures have made it increasingly difficult in clinical practice to take the time necessary to investigate histories and complex cases as thoroughly as I’d have liked, while ever-increasing clinical productivity pressure has driven physician burnout.
My training triangulates around the sub-sub-specialty of pediatric neuroradiology, and I’ve been asked to serve as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases. I’ve found the work fascinating and surprisingly satisfying because it has allowed me the luxury of time to gather all relevant diagnostic imaging studies and correlate them with medical histories, and then to think through my opinions thoroughly while forming as complete a picture as possible of what’s really going on in each case.
It struck me as odd that our healthcare delivery and reimbursement system prevents us from diving as deeply into a case as we’d like to when we’re performing our clinical roles before a lawsuit is filed - and that it’s only after a lawsuit is filed that we as experts are asked to go back through the complete records to figure out the truth of what happened in a case. This often happens after patient harm has occurred.
Wouldn’t it make more sense, I’ve felt, from a patient care quality and safety perspective to think carefully and thoroughly earlier in a case - before alleged harm has occurred? And as a physician, wouldn’t I find that to be a more satisfying way to practice? And wouldn’t this approach reduce overall costs to the system by reducing the frequency of medical errors, patient harm, and malpractice lawsuits?
In response I designed a new global, pan-specialty consulting clinical practice in which the emphasis is on empowering physicians to practice medicine on behalf of patients with as little administrative or bureaucratic interference as possible - and that is how MD For Patients was born.
